Willard Hackerman, President of Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, donated $1 million to Towson University to establish scholarships for graduates of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. Hackerman is a Poly grad, class of 1935.

“It is critical that we be able to attract more students into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) majors and to prepare teachers who will be energized to teach in area schools in these much needed discipline areas,” Hackerman said. “Poly graduates are especially well-suited to meet these needs, and it is my wish to give them the opportunity to develop their gifts at Towson University.”

The scholarships will benefit graduates of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute who intent to enroll at Towson University in the fall term, immediately following graduation from high school. Selection will be based on financial need, academic achievement and/or exceptional talent.

Towson University President Robert L. Caret, Ph.D., said, “We are appreciative of Mr. Hackerman’s generous gift which will provide additional opportunities for talented students from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute to attend Towson University as we prepare to meet the state’s science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and STEM education workforce needs. His gift supports his previous donation to establish the Hackerman Academy for Math and Science Education at Towson University. Importantly, it comes at time when families need it most.”
