Venable LLP announced a new management team and several leadership appointments. Brian Schwalb was named Vice Chairman and will serve alongside current firm Chairman, Jim Shea, in a newly created senior management structure. The management team, representing a cross section of offices and practice groups, will work hand-in-hand with Shea and Schwalb in leading the firm. Safeway Inc. announced that its Safeway brand skipjack (chunk-light) canned tuna will be responsibly caught using free-school purse-seine methods. The company will transition to the purse-seine method by the end of the year. Safeway is implementing these new specifications at a time when the tuna fishing industry is finding better ways to address the significant negative ecosystem impacts associated with purse-seine netted tuna fishing, a method that employs fish aggregating devices (FADs). PNC announced the appointment of Karen L. Guckert as Vice President, Business Banking Sales Manager. In her new role Karen will be responsible for leading a team of Business Bankers in the Baltimore County area. Read More

Aris Melissaratos, Senior Advisor to the President for Enterprise Development at John Hopkins University was named the 2011 Person of the Year at the Corridor Inc’s Sixth Annual Person of the Year Awards. Read More

Under Armour was named the official outfitter of Loyola University Maryland’s 17 athletic teams as well as for coaches and staff. This will begin in the 2012-2013 season.

AT&T expanded its 4G LTE network in College Park, bringing more customers the latest generation of wireless technology. AT&T launched 4G LTE in Baltimore in November 2011, and the expanded coverage in College Park is part of its ongoing rollout across the market.

Atlantic Financial Federal Credit Union CEO Richard T. Webb announced the management team promotions of two key personnel. Carol deGroot was promoted from Human Resources Manager to Director of Human Resources. Matthew P. Piazza, was promoted from Director of Finance to Vice President of Finance.

Pepco Holdings Inc. Chairman, President and CEO, Joseph M. Rigby, was voted the “Best Business Philanthropist” in the Washington metropolitan area in an informal online poll conducted by The Washington Business Journal (WBJ) from December 2, 2011 through January 25, 2012. Rigby, a write-in candidate, topped a formidable list of area philanthropists. Read More 

McCormick & Co. plans to open its first retail store, called McCormick World of Flavors at the Light Street pavilion at Harborplace this summer. The 3,800 sq. ft. store will include cooking demonstrations and interactive displays, as well as a wide range of gifts. Read More

W.R. Grace & Co. realigned its business into three operating segments and elected three officers: Grace Catalysts Technologies — Shawn Abrams, President, Grace Materials Technologies — Joanne Green, President and Grace Construction Products — Andrew Bonham, President. This will help make the Columbia chemicals and building products maker more efficient and cut overhead costs. Read More

Lockheed Martin was awarded one of five Operations Support Services Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity contracts from the U.S. General Services Administration Federal Systems Integration and Management Center in support of the Department of Defense’s Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization. The anticipated period of performance is two years with three optional one-year periods and an estimated cost ceiling of $900 million. Read More 

Two employees of Gross Mendelsohn earned their CPA designations — Jared Imhoff, a supervisor in the firm’s tax department, and Emily Girch, a senior accountant in the firm’s tax department.

Bozzuto Group Chairman and CEO Tom Bozzuto interviewed George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States, before an audience of 2,000 at the 2012 National Multi Housing Council (NMHC) Annual Meeting in Boca Raton, Florida. Also during the conference, NMHC elected Tom to serve a two-year term as the Council’s Chairman. Read More

McDaniel College will build a new two-story brick and concrete stadium on its Westminster campus. It will have features such as concession stands, restrooms, observation boxes, a large press box and filming areas. It will also feature additional seating, home and visiting team meeting rooms, and a reception and gathering room. Read More

KatzAbosch announced that three of the firm’s managers, Andrew L. Bareham, CPA, MST; Kristin N. Hucht, CPA; and Josh A. Sutherland, CPA, have been promoted to Principals. Read More

NuStar Energy L.P. ranked number 15 on the 15th annual “100 Best Companies to Work for” in Fortune magazine. NuStar, which made the list for four years in a row, moved up 15 places from last year when it ranked number 30. Read More

KCI appointed Senior Vice Presidents Charles A. Phillips Jr., RPLS and Thomas G. Sprehe, PE, BCEE, to its board of directors to serve as rotating members for a one-year term. Vice President Joel Keels, CCM, joined the board to serve as employee representative for the next two years.
