Austin J. Slater, Jr., President & CEO of Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, will be named Chairman of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors on April 29, during the Chamber’s Annual Membership Meeting and Business Hall of Fame Awards Dinner at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore. Slater has served on the Maryland Chamber’s Board of Directors since 2003. As Vice Chairman for the past two years, he has worked to improve Chamber events, engage more business leaders in the legislative process, and educate elected officials about the issues that impact Maryland employers. As Chairman, Slater will lead the 70-member Board of Directors in developing strategies to improve how the Chamber provides members with advocacy, information and connections.

Slater is active in many civic and community organizations. In addition to serving on the Maryland Chamber board, he also serves on the board of the College of Southern Maryland and the Community Bank of Tri-County. He previously served as a board member of the Consumer Federation of America, National Cooperative Business Association and the Cooperative Development Foundation.
Slater holds an MBA in finance from George Washington University, a bachelor degree from Shepherd College in accounting, and an associate degree from the College of Southern Maryland.
