The Maryland Chamber Business Development Council’s BDC on the Road series helps small and minority-owned business leaders learn how to do business with larger companies in order to grow and prosper. The Council recently took a trip to Giant Food’s Landover location to meet with Jaime Miller, Public Affairs Manager for Giant Food and James Sturgis, Director of Supplier Diversity for Ahold USA/Giant Food.
Giant Food is owned and operated by Royal Ahold, a Netherlands based company that operates supermarkets throughout Europe and the Northeastern United States.
Ahold USA breaks down how it buys into categories – For Resale and Not For Resale. For resale items are items that are sold in the grocery store such as ketchup, tortillas, produce, honey, etc. For resale items are more difficult to sell because it is expensive, subjective and calls for constant attention. Not for resale are goods and services needed to run its business such as office supplies, consultants, transportation, grocery bags, etc., which are more objective and is managed by their third party sourcing partner – Accenture.
Ahold USA’s supplier diversity initiative aims to enhance the procurement process by developing strong business relationships with a talented group of small and diverse businesses that offer quality products and services, excellent customer service and competitive costs.
In order to do business with Ahold/Giant Food, you must first register online.
Check out the video below of James Sturgis explaining how Ahold/Giant Food does business with small and minority-owned businesses.
